The trend-setter first German Lutheran missionary in India Ziegenbalg. Very enterprising and dedicated missionary, who was “tortured in life and swallowed up in death”. His was a rich and deep-rooted legacy, which survived 300 years. He praised without exaggeration, the rich Tamil civilization especially when he was sent to condemn this wrongly-imagined ‘barbarous’ civilization. His love for his Sattampillai (class pupil leader) Malaiyappan was very great that Ziegenbalg taught him German language and took him to Germany and made him to speak in front of the Danish King Frederick IV in “well-sounding” German language! History does not record such a parallel, wherein, any scholar from any other part of India of having been elevated to this rare academic eminence, 300 years ago.
